It works because it distracts you from “your” problems. it helps take the focus off you and on positive things. Anxiety and depression are so self focused that sometimes it is hard to get outside of ourselves. The very best way I have found to do this is to focus on someone or something else. You may not necessarily feel like doing that but it is the best thing you can do. Intentionally changing the focus off yourself can give you peaceful moments as well as help you realize all the blessings you do have in your life. Try it!

Recently I was listening to the radio and heard a story that really touched my heart. It was the kind of story that gives you goosebumps in a good way.

A woman was in line at the local coffee shop. She paid for her items and then handed the cashier an extra $5.00 for the person’s items behind her. That person was so touched she did the same thing. Pretty soon what turned out to be a single act of random kindness turned into a line of people out the door all “paying it forward.” This continued throughout the day as other radio listeners decided to drive to the coffee shop and be a part of this. We don’t often see this type of kindness. When we do it leaves an impression. The joy we experience as we do something for a complete stranger with no expectation of return cannot be described in its entirety. Simply put, “It feels good to help others.”

It is hard to keep up with the texting language nowadays. I believe, “LOL” is my favorite texting phrase. Wouldn’t it be nice to LOL more often?

I think most people are feeling very stressed with all the negative information that is being taken in each day. If we chose to be less affected by all of this and maybe LOL a bit more, I bet it would make us feel so much happier.

There are a lot of things we can’t change in life. LOL and adopting an attitude of gratitude and happiness is something we can do. Maybe this is something that will rub off onto others and make life a brighter, happier place to be.

In the short run, it is easier to avoid things that we fear. usually people have to get pretty tired of the pain that avoidance causes them in order to desire to face the tough things. It really doesn’t have to be that way. You can learn to motivate yourself in a positive way because that is what you desire to do. See yourself making the changes you want to make. Visualize it. Dream about it. Imagine the positive edge you will have when you finally face the tough things after all. People can be diagnosed with Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Anxiety Attacks… but it is fear that is underneath it. Face your fear in small doses. It is healthy to face fear. Little steps get you to the same place as the big steps do! Be kind to yourself. Have the courage to take the first step. Courage doesn’t mean there is no fear. Courage is stepping forward and facing the fear and knowing you have what it takes to do this. Just try.

What if thinking was a big part of my life years ago. The more what-ifs I thought about something the less I would do. Because what- if whatever scary thought I was thinking actually happened? Then what would I do?

What if thinking is actually called anticipatory anxiety. It can control your life and keep you from growing emotionally. People tend to anticipate the worst happening so they don’t do whatever it is they are what-ifing about. It can be a huge stumbling block.

Imagine if you actually don’t listen to that wha- if thought? Maybe you could start replacing the what- ifs with “So what- if!” You might say something like, “So what if I feel anxious, I can deal with that.” Or maybe you would say, “So what -if I don’t get the job promotion, at least I tried and made the effort.”

So stretch your wings and step out there. You will feel emotionally stronger and be proud of yourself for removing the stumbling blocks.

After all the hustle and bustle of the holidays January has come. Activities slow down and the winter days and nights might seem rather long. Does this sound rather gloomy? When you have anxiety and depression this becomes a reality.

It really doesn’t have to be this way at all. If you replace negative, distorted thoughts with positive, energizing thoughts, you can actually begin to look forward to each day. In general people are going to feel how they think. Let’s give this new way of thinking a try!

You might say to yourself, “Happy New year!” This New Year is a time for renewal and new beginnings. It is an opportunity to set new goals, start and finish new projects inside your home, spend quality time with your family and so much more. For some it is about letting go of the past mistakes you might have made or even other people might have done to you and forgive yourself or others! This New Year is a gift. Reach out and be the kind of person you can feel proud of. Make new friends. Shower people with love and thoughtfulness. Strengthen your relationship with God. Give without any expectations. You won’t regret the “new you” for a moment!
